Mixbook Editor 101: Getting to Know Our Editor’s Text Toolbar

by Elle Daquioag on May 1, 2012

Text Toolbar Pin

Today we’re going to take a look at the text toolbar and all the wonderful things the toolbar allows us to do! We’ll divide the toolbar into seven parts and discuss each area below.

Divided Toolbar

The first section we will look at is the drop down font menu.

Font MenuClicking on this drop down menu will allow you to choose from the different fonts Mixbook has to offer. To change your font, first highlight the text. Next, click on the drop down menu and select your font. Once it has been selected, the text on the page will change.

The next section consists of the text size.

Text Menu

There are two ways to change your text size. The first way consists of clicking on the drop down menu. This will bring up the text slider. You can move the slider up and down to increase and decrease the text size respectively. Alternatively, you can type in the size of your font. Simply highlight the number in the menu and replace it with your desired size.

If you’re wondering what the text size will look like, in relation to your book, you can download our PDF examples of text sizes for each book size: 14×11, 12×12, 11×8.5, 8.5×8.5, 8×6, and 6×4. Make sure you are viewing the PDF at 100% zoom level for the most accurate representation.

The third section consists of three ways to modify your text.

Modification Buttons

These three buttons will change your text by making it bold, italicized, or underlined. To add these modifications, highlight the text, then click the respective button.

Next we have our text alignment menu.

Alignment Menu

Clicking on this drop down menu will allow you to align your text to the left, right, or center of the existing text box. The “justify” alignment will fill the space evenly to create straight edges on the margins.

After our alignment menu comes the color swatch, which may be familiar to many of you!

Text Color Swatch
Clicking on the color swatch will bring up different color options for your text. You can learn more about choosing colors from our previous blog entry on the color wheel, eyedropper tool, and hex codes.

Our second to last section consists of our text style tools.

Text Style Toolbox

This is another icon that may be familiar to many of our users. Clicking this paintbrush will bring up five different style options for your text, which you can preview below:

**Please note, both the Border and Fill Style will apply to the entire text box.

Last but not least is the placement section.

Text Placement

These buttons allow you to bring your text forward, send it back, or remove it from your page.

And there you have it—all the buttons and functions of the Mixbook Toolbar! You can start editing your projects by clicking here.

I am an avid Mixbooker, and love the program. I was wondering if you will be adding MORE fonts to choose from. I have added fonts for scrapbooking to my computer, but your options are extremely limited and I’m unable to access the fonts on my computer. Will you eventually be making all fonts accessible??

Mixbook Customer Care Team May 3, 2012 at 9:13 am

Hi Donna!
We are glad that you are enjoying our site! Thank you for your feedback and suggestion about adding additional fonts to the editor. We will definitely pass this along to our design and engineering team! Please let us know if you have any other great ideas! We love hearing customer feedback. Take care and keep up the Mixbooking! :]
Warmest Regards,
Brianna

Jen May 9, 2012 at 9:28 am

It would be great if we could add our own fonts.

Mixbook Customer Care Team May 9, 2012 at 2:14 pm

Hi Jen,
At this time, we do not have a feature that allows you to upload your own fonts. Thank you for the suggestion, though! We will forward your message to our engineering team! :)
Best Regards,
Veronica

Is there any way to create vertical text? Just realized I don’t know how to that in Mixbook and can’t find that option. Thanks!!!

Myra

Elle Daquioag June 7, 2012 at 7:59 am

Hi Myra,
To create vertical text, you’ll want to add the text box and type in the text. Next, click on the button with two arrows creating a circle, and rotate your text ninety degrees. We hope this helps!

Donna LaVergne June 7, 2012 at 10:33 pm

That doesn’t create Vertical Text. All that does is turn the text sideways. Vertical text would be text that is still right side up with each letter directly beneath each other.

Elle Daquioag June 8, 2012 at 6:31 am

Hi Donna,
We currently do not have that feature, but if you would like each letter to line up beneath each other, you can use the work around of hitting the enter key after every letter. We hope this helps!

I have just begun MixBooking, and I have a particular memorial project in mind. I want to memorialize my mother’s 86 years on 2 continents in war and in peace along with her family and I am unsure how much room that will take. What are the limits to the number of pages I can use?

Elle Daquioag July 26, 2012 at 9:06 am

Hi Robert,
Welcome to Mixbook! We hope you’re enjoying yourself so far. :) Your project sounds amazing and we’re sure it’ll become a family heirloom! At this time, the maximum number of pages our photo books can have is 399. Please let us know if you have any further questions! Happy Mixbooking!

Tamara July 29, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Hello!! I have loved working with Mixbook and can’t wait to see my first project in print. However, I’m waiting (hoping) since I saw that you might be adding the ability to use foreign alphabet characters soon? The project is about traveling in Turkey with my friend and her name has a Turkish letter in it. I don’t want to use American characters since that isn’t correct for her name – and she was my hostess so I really want this to be right! Any idea of when that feature might be coming? Or how I could sneak a foreign character into the Mixbook text in some other way.
Thanks in advance!
Tamara

Mixbook Customer Care Team July 30, 2012 at 7:31 am

Hi Tamara!
At this time, our software does not support most International characters or accent marks. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. We do hope to support more accent marks and languages in the future, although there is not a set date.

As a workaround, you can create a text box with the accent mark inside of it (such as ‘ ` .. ) and place it above the desired character so that the letter appears to have an accent mark.

Please let us know if you have any further questions or comments, and we will be happy to help!
Best Regards,
Veronica

Is there a way that I can edit my Mixbook project on my iPad?

Elle Daquioag September 24, 2012 at 7:32 am

Hi Sheila,
At this time, Mixbook projects cannot be accessed from an iPad. Our editor runs on Adobe Flash, and at this time, the Flash program does not run on Apple’s iPad. We do apologize about the inconvenience, but you can definitely access your projects from any computer that has the Flash program and can connect to the internet. If you have any further questions, please feel free to e-mail support@mixbook.com. Thank you!

Andrea October 2, 2012 at 11:30 am

If you want to use a different font you need to create a png with your font in another program then add it as a sticker. Tedious, but works.

I also second the fact that mixbook is awesome but could use more fonts.

I would love to see a preview for stickers just like you added to photos. When I upload word art it is sometimes hard to see, I would love it if when you went over it with a mouse if it would give you a preview of stickers like you do with photos!

Also I would love to see an option to colorize some stickers. Some of your stickers are in limited colors and having the option to change it from white/black to another color would really add so many more options!

Mixbook Customer Care Team October 2, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Hi Andrea!

We love hearing feedback and ideas from our users! Thank you so much for the valuable suggestions! We will be happy to forward them to our engineering team. Please let us know if you have any additional questions, comments, or concerns, and we’d be happy to help! :)

All the best,
Veronica

tna December 12, 2012 at 9:28 pm

Hi,

How do we remove the underline when I input some texts?

Mixbook Customer Care Team December 13, 2012 at 7:19 am

Hi Tna!
While we do not offer a spell check button that reviews your entire project at once, we do have a spell check feature incorporated in the Mixbook Editor. When a word is misspelled, the Mixbook editor will display a red dotted line under the word. You can then right-click on the word to view a list of suggested spellings or add the words to your Mixbook dictionary so they are not highlighted again. Please note that these red lines will not appear in print. We hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any additional questions! :)
Best Regards,
Veronica

Am making a Family book. When I click on the color swatch, all I see are greyscale colors. What’s the problem? (MacBook OS 10.5.8, Firefox 16.0.2)

Mixbook Customer Care Team December 14, 2012 at 3:30 pm

Hi Linda, to change the color of your text, please click on the text to access the text edit box and highlight the text you’d like to change. A grey toolbar will appear below your textbox, which gives you the ability to change the font, size, color, etc. To change the color of your font to any color besides the provided black, whites, and grays, simply click the color wheel next to the hex field and choose the color you’d like. We hope this helps and feel free to contact us at support@mixbook.com.

Fran January 4, 2013 at 6:36 pm

I just started on MixBook, and am impressed with my results so far, especially as I am not a techie. I am having trouble with the “insert text” function – I click into the text box, and no matter what font size I choose, it displays in tiny red font that is unreadable. Why does the text not show in the font that I have chosen?

Also – I really like the page wide bands of colour in some of the templates – is it possible to create my own additional bands that are page wide, and when I try to move them, will they take inserted text with them?

Thanks for your help.

Mixbook Customer Care Team January 6, 2013 at 10:54 am

Hello Fran,

Sorry to hear of the difficulties you are experiencing with our Editor! If you are working with one of our themes, there may be a default text font and size that is applied to each page. If you would like to adjust the font style, size, and color, please first highlight the text, then proceed with your changes.

In regards to stickers and bands, we do offer a basic set of sticker shapes that you can adjust the color. These basic shapes are located on the top area of the “Stickers” column in the Mixbook Editor. We recommend using the square shape and stretching the square to create your customized band.

If you layer text on top of a sticker, you will need to select both items in order to shift them. You can click and drag a box around these items to select both of them.

We hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Fran January 8, 2013 at 8:01 pm

Thanks Kyle – I am using the Color Portfolio – I add a text box; I click out of it; the message “click to insert text” appears; I click and type; tiny red font shows no matter what font and size I choose; if I highlight the text, it appears as I have typed it; as soon as I take the highlight off, the tiny font appears again.

I would really appreciate your help. Fran

I add a text box; the message click to insert text appears I try to click and type but nothing happens. I can’ t get a cursor to come up so I can start typing, what m I doing wrong?

Mixbook Customer Care Team March 5, 2013 at 1:31 pm

Thanks for your post!

We are sorry to hear that you are encountering issues with our Editor! Please note that you will need to click in the center of the text box to begin entering text. You can tell if you are about to enter text if the cursor flashes in a “I” shape just before you click. Once you click, you should be able to enter text into your newly placed text box.

If you continue to experience issues, please let us know. Have a great week and keep up the Mixbooking!

Is there a way to change the layout from a horizontal card to a vertical? I am having trouble finding that option! I know there has to be a way, what am I not seeing?

Mixbook Customer Care Team March 21, 2013 at 11:11 am

Hi Lauren!
You can definitely copy your card to a new size! Here is the link to show you the easy step-by-step instructions on how to do so: http://blog.mixbook.com/copy-project/
This tutorial shows you how to copy a photo book to a smaller size, but the same steps can be followed to copy your card to any size.

Please note that we currently do not have a way to copy a folded card design to a flat card design, and vice versa. Once you copy your card to the new size, please review your card to make sure that all of the design elements are where you want them to be, as changing the size of your card may cause your design elements to move.
We hope this helps, and if you have any other questions please do not hesitate to ask :)
Cheers!

Any progress on adding foreign characters? I am creating a family tree book. Have been working many, many weeks on it, and now find that I am unable to spell many of my Swedish and German relatives’ names correctly, because it can’t handle the ö, ä, and å. Very discouraging to spend this much time and effort only to find out that this program isn’t going to be able to do what I need. Any suggestions?

Mixbook Customer Care Team April 26, 2013 at 1:31 pm

Hi Linda!
Currently, our software does not support most International characters or accent marks, and we will not be able to launch this in the near future. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and we will forward your feedback to our engineers to add your suggestion to our requested features list. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Please feel free to message us at support@mixbook.com if you have any additional questions, comments, or concerns!
Cheers!
Veronica
